Developer Control Plane

Flanksource Mission Control is a source-open, Kubernetes-native Internal Developer Portal that makes operating complex systems easier. It enables GitOps workflows with editable resources backed by Git pull requests, and provides a unified view for monitoring health and tracking changes across cloud, on-premise and legacy infrastructure.

Flanksource Mission Control

Flanksource Mission Control is a source-open Kubernetes-native internal developer portal that helps teams of all maturity levels improve developer productivity and operational resilience.

Profile

Mission Control is designed to be easy to adopt with a schema-less design that uses prometheus-style probes and scrapers to automatically discover and enrich the catalog with changes, properties and relationships. Alerts, security and cost insights are aggregated from multiple providers including Alert manager, CloudWatch, Datadog, Trusted Advisor, Azure Monitor and Trivy to provide a holistic view of the system. Mission Control is self-hosted first, easy to install on your local machine and free for non-production use.

Focus

Mission Control is built for teams who need a better way to operate the systems they already have, regardless of their maturity level. We believe the true cost of a service lies in its operational lifetime, not just its initial development. That's why we prioritize functionality that simplifies the ongoing operations of complex systems.

Background

Platform engineering initiatives often fall short of their potential, a theme Flanksource’s consulting team observed firsthand. Teams repeatedly faced three key challenges: a widening infrastructure skills gap between developers and operators due to increasing complexity, fatigue stemming from processes requiring widespread change, and limited discoverability hindering developers from effectively finding and utilizing new capabilities. Mission Control was born from these experiences. It’s designed to address these challenges head-on, making platform engineering more accessible, adaptable, and less daunting for developers and platform engineers alike.

Flanksource Mission Control main features

Unified Catalog Mission Control uses prometheus-style scrapers to build a unified catalog of applications and infrastructure running on Kubernetes, Cloud and On-Premise. Automatic change detection and event correlation are provided through integrations with CloudTrail, Kubernetes events, and similar sources. Insights from Trivy, AWS Trusted Advisor, and Cost & Usage Reports further enrich the catalog. The dependency graph enables you to see changes both downstream and upstream of any component. GitOps Orchestrator / Playbooks Playbooks to create and edit any Kustomize resource vit Git Pull Request are setup-free, enabling rapid GitOps adoption. GitOps based control planes can also be built with playbooks that trigger on catalog changes, health and webhooks. Health Checks Mission Control gives you a single pane of glass into the health of your systems by aggregating alerts from tools like Prometheus, Cloudwatch and Datadog while also running synthetic tests against your applications using 30+ protocols like HTTP, S3, SQL, Mongo. Infrastructure health is assessed by evaluating Kubernetes objects and actively spinning up infrastructure to monitor control planes.
