Profile

Kubermatic Kubernetes Platform (KKP) is a Kubernetes management platform that helps address the operational and security challenges of enterprise customers seeking to run Kubernetes at scale. KKP automates deployment and operations of hundreds or thousands of Kubernetes clusters across hybrid-cloud, multi-cloud and edge environments while enabling DevOps teams with a self-service developer and operations portal. KKP is directly integrated with leading cloud providers including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, Azure, Openstack, VMware vSphere, Open Telekom Cloud, Digital Ocean, Hetzner, Alibaba Cloud, Equinix Metal and Nutanix. For selected providers, ARM is supported as CPU architecture. In addition to the long list of supported cloud providers, KKP allows building your own infrastructure and joining Kubernetes nodes via the popular kubeadm tool. KKP is the easiest and most effective software for managing cloud native IT infrastructure and automating multi-cloud operations thanks to its unparalleled density and resilience.

Focus

Kubermatic Kubernetes Platform is in an open source project to centrally manage the global automation of thousands of Kubernetes clusters across multicloud, on-prem and edge with unparalleled density and resilience.

Background

Kubermatic Kubernetes Platform (KKP) was initially developed by Kubermatic to address the challenges of managing Kubernetes clusters at scale. Since its inception, KKP has evolved with significant contributions from the open-source community. The platform is open-source, licensed under the Apache 2.0 license, and focuses on enabling seamless multi-cloud, on-premises, and edge Kubernetes management, and also has and Enterprise Edition with enhanced features. KKP is aligned with the Cloud Native Computing Foundation’s principles, emphasizing interoperability, scalability, and modern infrastructure management practices.

Main features

  • Multi-tenant and multi-cloud architecture enables organizational unit-based separation of cloud providers and environments, datacenter-specific data storage, streamlined in-cluster policy enforcement through multi-cluster separation, and consistent management with static cluster labels for immutable metadata tagging.
  • Automated Kubernetes lifecycle management simplifies cluster provisioning, scaling, updating, and cleanup via API calls, automates upgrade rollouts and rollbacks, streamlines repetitive tasks with templated workflows, and enhances OS-level configuration management through OSM migration.
  • Centralized backup and recovery with customizable schedules and locations supports multi-cluster and multi-cloud environments, optimizes storage with Gzip for ETCD snapshots, and integrates seamless Kubernetes application management for deploying, reconciling, and auto-installing third-party and preconfigured applications, ensuring reliability and efficiency.
